Students
Undergraduate Student
Thasanka Kandage
Thasanka Kandage is an undergraduate Software Engineering student at the University of Alberta. He is currently working on a Genetic Algorithm optimization project on liquid-based volumetric solar thermal receivers as part of his academic work. Thasanka is also an active member of one of the university’s robotics club, RoboMaster, where he is a member of the software team and further explores his deep interest in computer vision. Outside of academics, he enjoys sports, music, and film, and is always excited to talk these topics.
Undergraduate Student
Roshan Banisetti
Roshan Banisetti is an undergraduate Honours Computer Science student at the University of Alberta, where he is developing expertise in algorithms, machine learning, and software development. Roshan recently completed research on applying machine learning to renewable energy systems, developing a Physics-Guided Neural Network (PGNN) to model temperature profiles in solar thermal systems. This work enhanced predictive accuracy through hybrid data-driven and physics-based approaches, and he is currently writing a paper on his findings. Outside of work, Roshan enjoys playing soccer, volleyball, and badminton, spending time with friends, and working on building fun side project ideas.
Undergraduate Student
Bhuvana Veeravalli
Bhuvana Chandar Veeravalli is originally from India but was born and raised in Dubai, UAE. He is currently an undergraduate student pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science at the University of Alberta. He is part of a research team exploring advanced computational techniques, leveraging various algorithms, including genetic algorithms, to optimize the efficiency and temperature uniformity of liquid-based volumetric solar thermal receivers. In his free time, Bhuvana enjoys volunteering in his community, binge-watching shows, and playing and watching sports, especially cricket.
Undergraduate Student
Adam Jaikaran
Adam Jaikaran is a Fourth year undergraduate research assistant in Dr. Taha Manzoor’s Renewable Thermal Laboratory. His work focuses on the High Flux Solar Simulator, particularly on flux characterization and instrumentation within the experimental setup. He is currently pursuing a BSc in Mechanical Engineering through the co-op program, with strong interests in renewable energy and heat transfer. Outside of the lab, he enjoys skiing, biking, and golfing.
Undergraduate Student
Cayden Grant
Cayden Grant is a first year Engineering undergraduate student at the University of Alberta, who is planning to enter the Mechanical Engineering co-op program. As a volunteer research assistant, he is currently working on the instrumentation and documentation of the experimental setup for the High Flux Solar Simulator. In his free time, Cayden enjoys playing ultimate frisbee, practicing the piano, and reading.
